The History of the Nunnery Thomas Hewlett, a well-known English physician, commissioned the construction of the Nunnery in 1888. The first x-ray machines were established in this country in the year 1902, and his son Herbert Hewlett was one of the pioneers of x-ray technology in Australia. The archdiocese made the purchase of the building on behalf of the Daughters of Charity in 1944 for a total price of 5,732 pounds. The Daughters of Charity rechristened the building as St. Vincent's Hall and continued their pastoral and parish work in Fitzroy and Collingwood after the change.
In a spacious chamber on the ground level, a chapel and a confessional were erected in order to facilitate reflection and prayer; later, intimate worship services were held in this space. St. Mary's House of Welcome was established by the sisters in 1960 and is located on Brunswick Street. The Sisters would also take in as boarders young ladies between the ages of 16 and 19 who lived in the country but travelled to the city to work or attend school. According to urban legend, the Nuns were extremely authoritarian towards the young people living on their territory; curfews and regular wardrobe inspections were standard practise. Gentlemen callers were only permitted to enter the front lounge of the establishment.
In 1979, the house served as a residence for young ladies originating from Vietnam and Cambodia. The Nuns relocated to North Carlton in 1989 so that they could carry on their mission after the Refugee accomodation was closed down the previous year.
